Mbile International Artists' Exhibition

When:Aug 2007 (annual)

Where:Lusaka National Museum

The Zambian visual art scene is beginning to take off and the Mbile International Workshop aims to nurture it. Upcoming artists from all around the country meet with professional artists from Zambia and beyond and live together, discussing their work and trying out new ideas.

At the end of the workshop, there is an exhibition in the Lusaka National Museum which gives the public a chance to see what is happening on the contemporary art scene.

During the final years of colonial rule a handful of black artists flourished in Zambia, most prominent among them Henry Tayali. He emphasised the importance of staying true to his African roots and attempted to rediscover traditonal art forms through contemporary styles. Since independence, the Zambia National Visual Arts Council has been set up to foster new talent and several Zambian artists have been exhibited abroad.

The Mbile Exhibition largely consists of painting and sculpture. The artists have stayed true to Tayali's philosophy and many of the works on show are reflections in different styles on contemporary life in Zambia, both in the cities and in the rural areas. Lusaka is a fast-growing metropolis and the gateway to Zambia's many attractions. There are incredible safaris on the Zambezi River, as well as in Kafue and the Luangwa game parks. Even more off the beaten track are Lake Tanganyika and the wildebeest migration on the Liuwa Plains.
